Devotional Poetry

Poetry by Claude Howell

Over the years the church has known many talents. In 1970's and 80's Claude Howel was a friend of the Coltman Street Mission and would on occasions visit and share some of his devotional poetry.

What Was His Station

Not, how did He die?
But, how did He live?
Not what did He gain?
But what did He give?

These are the units to measure the worth
of a man as a man regardless of birth
Not, what was his station?
But, had He a heart?
How did he play His God-given part?

Was He ever ready with a word of good cheer
To bring back a smile or banish a tear
Not, what was His church or what was His creed?
But, had he befriended those really in need?
Not, what did the words in the newspaper say?
But, how many were sorry when he passed away?

Claude Howell

The Vision

THE world, I thought, belonged to me -
Goods, gold and people, land and sea.
WHEREVER I walked beneath God's sky
In those days my word was "I"

YEARS passed, there flashed my pathway near
The fragment of a vision dear.
My former word no more sufficed -
And what I said was "I and Christ"

AND then the more I looked on Him
His glory grew, while mine grew dim.
I shrank so small, He towered so high,
All I dare say was "Christ and I"

YEARS more the vision held its place
And looked me steadily in the face.
I speak now in humbler tone
And what I say is "Christ alone"

Psalm

My glory fills the temple, My glory fills your life
Child of mine come back to me, I'll protect you from the strife.
In the cleft of a rock I will shield you from all sickness and pain
Each day I will give you beauty like sunshine after rain.

I know all about your troubles, your struggles and your fears
My child, my princess, My dear sweet daughter, I am ever near.
The extent of my love for you cannot be measured to a shore of sand
Although you are sometimes far from me, not one will be plucked from my hand.

So come back to me my precious child and rest with me awhile
I shall fill you with my love and joy and in me you will once again smile

My child forget the former things, see I make all things new
ln the storm of life I have been with you and bathed you as in the morning dew.
Over the horizon there are pastures new, come with me my child I pray
My grace is sufficient, my love beyond measure, please come into my presence today

Mary Jurkiewicz

I Can Face Tomorrow

As the new dawn of day brings forth the sunrise
I awake from slumber to greet the morning surprise
The rays fill the room with each brand new chink of light
God's wonder unfolds and brings wonderful delight
A prayer time awaits where God's blessings unfold
The spirit it quickens with great joys untold
It gives way to the melody and songs in my heart
Unmerited favour God's grace he freely imparts
Filled with his love I can rise on the eagles wings
In beauty and glory I worship Jesus the blessed King
I can then greet others with love and hope
That we can in knowledge and assurance in his blessings cope
There is nothing too difficult no matter the sorrow
Because my redeemer lives - I can face tomorrow.

Anita Margaret

In glorious abounding love He will meet with you today
His blessed assurance will capture you as you travel along life's way
Mercies new grace abounds from whence His sweet love come
My child I have chosen you - you are mine
For my glory I have called you by name
Anita Margaret you are to me a princess a rose so fair
Nothing in this world will be as special to you
My love you cannot compare
I give you hope in all things where the world would say there's none
That is why my precious child I sent my dearly beloved son
I sent him to show how much I cared if not all would have been lost
He gave his life to set you free the price was paid on the cross
But he rose again in triumph and his kingdom will have no end
He is King of Kings He is Lord of Lords
Anita Margaret he is also your friend

Poetry by Abraham Overvoorde – Inspired by Jesus Christ

Trinity is Three

Gliding softly through the night,
Oh to look upon this beautiful sight.
Filled with Joy, Peace and Grace,
a tear is left on a touched face.
The blessing of the Holy three,
That's what is delivered to me.
As we praise the Lord forever,
our guide helps our life endeavour.
We pray and sing to God our King,
as blessings are carried on the angels wing.
As it guides us through the day,
our fears and worries it takes away.

Abraham Overvoorde

Wonderful Love

Saviour, Lord you are to me,
Beautiful as one may be.
Bless my heart and bless my soul,
Give me peace to fill this hole.
Holy King you soon will be,
Standing their for all to see.
Give me strength to win this war,
the power of prayer my guide for sure.
When it's over we'll have won,
On to Heaven to see the Son.
Heavens Angle there I’ll be,
Praising for Eternity.

Abraham Overvoorde

Light of the World

Light so bright, light so calm,
Shimmers softly it causes no harm.
You can’t touch it but you can see,
All the love it brings to thee.
Blessing Saviour, holy friend,
Lift this heart up, help it mend.
Loving God I give to thee,
Praise and Glory, Lord is He.

Abraham Overvoorde

Waiting with a Peace

The wind blow, the trees howl,
Gently floating by is the pure white owl.
As the night gets colder,
I feel this life grows older.
Once where there was no pain,
I’m going back to that place again.
The leaves rustle to the sound of the stream,
Yet nothing is large enough to defeat the Almighty’s team.
As I gaze into the night,
There is nothing that can fright.
Recklessly I abandon myself before your throne,
No longer will I wait hopelessly alone.

Abraham Overvoorde

Redeemed

Why are you waiting when you can see,
That he’s the one to set you free.
Open your heart and he will give,
All you’ll ever need to live.
Holy Lord I ask you now,
Come to me so I may bow.
Stay with me forevermore,
Till I stand outside your door.
Come and fill this heart with Love,
So I can sing in Heaven above.

Abraham Overvoorde

Minder

When your down and Troubled,
Don’t let your fears be doubled.
Pray to God he wants to know,
How you feel, he’ll guide you so.
He took my life and made it whole,
Now my prayers come from the Soul.
Believe me when I say it’s true,
That he will do the best for you.
Pray for someone you will see,
All the good it does for thee.

Abraham Overvoorde

Jesus’ Birthday

A Star so bright,
Shine’s in the night.
A babe lies in a Stable,
Angel’s come, the Sheppard’s hear,
Of the king they need not fear.
Wise men of 3 come from the east,
To see the new born Lord, high Priest.
Jesus is alive today,
Christmas is his Birthday.

Abraham Overvoorde

Missing Something?

Wine and beer are down the pub,
Exotic dancer’s in the club.
Father Christmas comes on his Sleigh,
Warm mince pies lay on a tray.
Movie Premiers and repeats galore,
There’s only one thing I want more.
So step aside santa and bow to him,
The real star of Christmas, his light is never dim.
So when you eat your Christmas meal,
And ask yourself, what’s the deal?
Jesus was born
Celebrate his birth on Christmas morn.

Abraham Overvoorde

Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit comforter of my Heart,
I want Your love to be a part.
Ask for more and receive I will,
Every part of me He’ll fill.
Living Water rising up,
Holy Lord You fill my cup.
Fullness of joy, saturate my Soul,
Holy Spirit make me whole.

 Abraham Overvoorde

Lord most High

Open up the Heaven’s Lord,
We want to see Your Glory out pored.
With an everlasting Love,
You’re the Holy Lord above.
Fill us up so we can sing,
All Your Glory, You are the King.
You lead us through our time of strife,
Cos You’re the Way the Truth and the Life.

Abraham Overvoorde

Our Omnipresent Friend

He's above us, he carries us,
Across the sinking sand.
He's below us, he strengthens us,
He's the Rock on which we stand

He's In front of us, he leads us,
Along life's narrow way.
He's behind us, he watches us.
To stop us going astray.

He's beside us, he guides us
Our lives, he is a part.
He's inside us, he lives in us
He's here, within my heart.

James Barker
